Croatia Yacht Charter FAQ

Private charter options include sailing yachts, catamarans, motor yachts, gulets, private small cruise ships and luxury yachts or superyachts. The best fit depends on group size, budget, boating experience and the level of service you want.

Sailing yacht: a single-hull yacht, normally bareboat-based, compact and sailing-focused. Catamaran: a twin-hull yacht with more living space and stability, also commonly bareboat-based. Gulet: a larger traditional-style vessel supplied with its captain/skipper and vessel crew.

A gulet being crewed does not mean every meal, drink or local cost is included.

Bareboat: your group operates the yacht and looks after itself. Skipper-only: a professional skipper operates the yacht, but your group still handles shopping, meals, dishes and interior living areas. Skipper + Host: adds assistance with provisioning, breakfast/light lunches, dishes and normal interior housekeeping.

Saturday-Saturday for 7 nights is the standard charter pattern across much of the Croatia charter industry and is generally the main-season minimum. Individual vessels and dates can vary.

Sometimes, particularly outside peak periods or on vessels that permit non-standard turnover days. In the main season, 7-night Saturday-Saturday bookings are normally the easiest to source and price.

Most charter fleets use a weekly turnover cycle so the yacht can return, be inspected, cleaned, serviced and prepared for the next group. That is why Saturday-Saturday is the standard pattern on many privately chartered yachts.

The main season runs through the warmer months, with July and August busiest. May, June, September and October can also be excellent depending on the vessel and the type of holiday you want.

It depends on the vessel. Smaller yachts may suit only a few guests, while catamarans, gulets, private cruise ships and larger crewed yachts can accommodate larger groups. The vessel's legal passenger and overnight capacity cannot be exceeded.

Yes. The person responsible for the yacht must hold qualifications accepted for that particular vessel and charter area. Send copies before booking so the operator can confirm acceptance.

A recognised VHF/radio qualification is commonly required alongside the boating qualification for bareboat charter. The exact requirement depends on the vessel and operator, so send both documents for approval before paying a charter deposit.

Australian boating qualifications are State-based and are not automatically accepted for every Croatian charter yacht. The operator may need to see the actual licence, its vessel-size/type limits and supporting information from the issuing authority. Approval is vessel-specific, so check before booking.

Add a professional skipper. You can still have the flexibility of a private yacht without operating it yourself. A skipper handles the yacht; they do not automatically provide catering and housekeeping.

The skipper operates and navigates the yacht, handles docking and manoeuvring, monitors conditions, advises on the route and is responsible for safe operation. The skipper does not normally shop, prepare meals, wash dishes or clean the interior accommodation.

Yes, on many yachts. Host/ess (Host) services generally include assistance with provisioning and shopping, breakfast and light lunches, dishes and normal interior housekeeping. Food and drinks remain additional.

Yes, on suitable yachts. A Private Chef can be added when your group wants more extensive meal preparation than a Host normally provides. Provisions and drinks remain additional unless specifically included.

Hired crew need suitable sleeping accommodation. Some yachts have dedicated crew cabins; others require crew to use an advertised cabin or berth. This can reduce passenger capacity and must be checked before booking.

Your starting point depends on where the chosen yacht is based and the surrounding bookings. Common bases include the Split/Trogir region, Dubrovnik, Zadar and Sibenik, with other bases available along the Croatian coast.

Yes on many vessels, subject to availability. A one-way charter can involve a repositioning or delivery fee and depends on where the yacht needs to be before and after your booking.

Private charter gives you considerable flexibility. Discuss preferred islands, towns and bays with the skipper or captain. The final itinerary remains subject to weather, safety, distances, berth availability and the vessel's capabilities.

No. Depending on the yacht, route and conditions, overnight stops can include marinas, town ports, moorings or anchorages. The mix of stops is one reason marina costs can only be estimated in advance.

Your charter documents give the exact times. Weekly yacht charters commonly embark on Saturday afternoon after cleaning and technical checks, and return early enough for the yacht to be inspected before the next charter. Do not rely on a generic time when planning flights or transfers.

Bring the documents listed by the operator. For bareboat charter this commonly includes the original accepted boating qualification, VHF/radio qualification where required, passports or identification and the charter/booking documents.

You can arrive in the area earlier, but the yacht may not be available. The operator needs time to clean, inspect and prepare it after the previous charter. Your documents state the actual embarkation time.

Yes. Transfers can be arranged separately between airports, hotels and the charter base. They are additional unless the individual quote specifically includes them.

Possibly. Hiring a skipper does not automatically remove the charterer's security-deposit or damage-waiver obligations. The individual yacht contract states what applies.

Report damage immediately to the skipper/operator and follow the charter agreement. On bareboat charters, repair costs may be dealt with through the security deposit, damage waiver or applicable insurance arrangements. Keep written records and photographs where relevant.

It depends on the vessel, operator and quote. Do not assume VAT treatment from a headline price. The written quotation should state the amount payable and what taxes or charges are included or additional.

No. A private charter is not all-inclusive unless the individual written quote specifically says it is. Use the Charter Costs FAQ and Calculator before comparing headline prices.

Usually they can be catered for with sufficient advance notice, but the exact menu and ability to accommodate allergies or special diets must be confirmed with the individual vessel. Provide requirements in the preference information before departure.

It depends on the vessel and where it is berthed. Larger yachts and gulets may use shore power in port and generators while away from shore. Generator operating hours and noise restrictions can limit overnight air-conditioning, so check the individual vessel specification.

Usually, but the available voltage, socket type and when full mains power is available depend on the yacht, inverter, generator and shore-power connection. Croatia uses European-style 230V power. Check the yacht specification before bringing high-draw appliances.

Many yachts provide Wi-Fi or mobile-data access, but coverage and performance at sea vary by location. Do not expect the same reliability as a fixed service on land.

Reception is generally available along much of the populated coast and islands, but weak or absent coverage is possible in remote bays or farther offshore. Roaming charges depend on your mobile provider.

They are commonly provided, but quantities and whether beach towels are included vary by vessel. Your yacht specification or quote will confirm this.

Only if it is listed in the yacht specification or Included section of the quote. Tender, outboard, fuel and usage rules vary by vessel.

Pack lightly and use soft-sided bags where possible. They fold and store much more easily than large rigid suitcases in yacht cabins.
